Criteria for Selecting Your Best Printer for Art Prints

Choosing the right printer for your art prints can be a daunting task. With so many options available, it’s common to have questions about which features are essential and what printer will meet your specific needs as an artist. To help you make an informed decision, we’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions about selecting the best printer for art prints. In this section, we’ll address common concerns and provide you with expert advice to guide you in your search for a printer that will bring your artwork to life in stunning detail and vibrant colors.

Can the Printer Handle Card Stock?

If you plan on using card stock, it’s important to know if the printer can handle it. However, not all card stock is created equal, so make sure to check the maximum thickness the printer can accommodate. Keep in mind that if the card stock is too thick, it may get stuck in the printer, causing frustration and damage to your equipment.

Do I Need a Scanner?

If you require a scanner, you might consider a four-in-one multi-use printer. However, if you already have a scanner, you could opt for a standalone printer instead.

Can It Do Batch Printing and Doesn’t Have an Auto Feeder?

If you plan on printing in bulk, look for a printer that can handle batch printing and has an auto feeder to save you time and effort. Manually feeding paper into the printer can be tedious, especially when you have many pages to print.

Printer for Art PrintsWhat Size and Width Printer Do I Need?

Consider the size of the prints you need to make when selecting a printer. If you require larger prints, such as 16×20 art prints, you will need a 17-inch wide format printer. For smaller prints, a 11-inch or 13-inch wide printer may suffice. Larger printers can also save on cost and time, allowing you to print multiple prints on a single piece of paper.

What Quality of Ink Do I Need?

The quality of ink you need depends on the purpose of your prints. If you’re printing art for an art gallery or museum, you’ll want archival-level ink that won’t fade over time. However, if you don’t need that high level of quality, dye-based ink may be sufficient.

What Image Quality Do I Need?

The number of ink cartridges a printer has can affect the color range and color gamut it can produce. Consider how many cartridges you need based on the image quality you require. Some printers have as few as one cartridge, while others can have up to 10.

Will This Be Future-proof?

Consider the release date of the printer to determine if it’s at the beginning or end of its life cycle. Newer printers may be more up-to-date and last longer than older ones.

Is the Printhead Replaceable on the Printer?

If the printhead can be replaced, it can save you money in the long run. High-end Canon printers often have replaceable printheads.

Do You Care About How Much the Ink Costs?

Consider the cost of ink when selecting a printer. Some printers have refillable ink cartridges or tanks, which can be a more cost-effective option.

Can the Printer Print Borderless?

Some printers can print up to the very edges of the paper, which can be useful for creating a seamless, professional-looking print.

Inkjet Printer or Laser Printer?

For printing photos and image-heavy documents, inkjet printers are generally the better choice. They can print on a variety of papers and produce smooth colors more effectively than laser printers.

How to Print Digital Artwork Without Losing Quality and Maintaining the Same Colors?

Are you unsure about the best way to prepare your artwork for printing? Look no further! I’ve put together a step-by-step guide to walk you through my entire process, from selecting the right canvas settings to choosing the best paper and printer settings.

First and foremost, let’s start with the canvas settings in Procreate. This is a crucial step in ensuring your prints maintain their high-quality appearance. Personally, I prefer to work on large canvases in RGB mode with a resolution of 300 dpi or higher. To make printing even easier, I recommend investing in a Samsung SD drive. It’s fast, reliable, and allows you to save your work and backups without the hassle of syncing to the cloud.

Once you’ve finished your artwork, export it in a Photoshop format or PDF and save it to the drive. Choose an A3 canvas size with a resolution of 300 dpi and set the color mode to CMYK. Next, open the file from the drive and check that everything looks good. Then, go to image mode and convert it to CMYK. This process usually results in very little quality loss, but be aware that some work may require direct work in this color mode on your iPad.

After converting to CMYK, move the layer to the A3 document created earlier and double-check the settings, especially when it comes to the paper you’ll be using. My two favorite papers for printing are the A3+ Staples matte paper (230gsm) and the Canon matte photo paper, which is also excellent and easily accessible. Both papers produce vivid, accurate colors that truly bring artwork to life.

Before printing, review the printer settings to ensure everything is in good order. Double-check that the paper settings are for the correct size (A3 or A3+ depending on your needs) and that color is managed by Photoshop. I recommend using the Canon MP2 color profile for the best results.

With everything set up, it’s time to print! Simply send your file to print and watch as your artwork comes to life on the page.
